Symmetry Electronics today announced it is currently shipping the recently introduced Gizmo Explorer Kits
developed by GizmoSphere. The kit’s main feature is the Gizmo board
– a palm sized low-cost board able to run a variety of operating systems including Android, Linux, RTOSes and Windows intended for x86-based embedded system development. Gizmo was designed by GizmoSphere, a not-for-profit organization whose collective goal is to drive and enable technology projects focused on innovation around multicore heterogeneous computing using APUs.
Gizmo consists of a dual-core AMD
G-T40E G-Series embedded APU that runs 1GHz and contains an AMD Radeon HD 6250 GPU at 280Mhz. Power for the 4-inch x 4-inch Gizmo board is rated at sub-10W, but what really sets the Gizmo Explorer Kit apart from similar platforms are the features. The Gizmo board can run 1920×1080 graphics and includes a 16-pin VGA output (HDMI available through the high-speed connector), 10/100 Ethernet, SATA Port and 1GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1066Mhz. The many connectivity options, OpenCL capabilities along with dual-core APU, AMD hardware decode engine and 1GB of DDR3 memory combine to make up a much more robust and powerful unit able to handle tasks far more complex than alternative open source development platforms.
