A List of Devices That Can be Powered with PoE (Power over Ethernet)
Tuesday, April 29, 2014
When PoE (Power over Ethernet) first became available, the products it could be used in were very limited. The technology was practical and extremely beneficial for some applications, like VoIP phones, but it couldn’t be used to power a large video display, for example. Over the years, though, the wattage capabilities of PoE have increased, while the power demands for many devices have decreased. Now the possibilities of PoE are almost endless, and customers often ask us how much wattage their design actually needs. Here, we will give some examples to show how much wattage various types of designs require.
What is PoE?
PoE enables electrical power to be passed through Ethernet cables instead of standard electrical wiring. Since one does not need a licensed electrician to run Cat5e or Cat6 cable, and this networking cable can be run anywhere, there is much greater design flexibility. Products like digital signage and security systems become simplified and less expensive to install.
What Can I Power with PoE?
Everything from VoIP phones to thin clients to LCD TVs can be powered with PoE. Just determine how much power your device will need, and chances are there is a PoE product available to integrate into your design.
Here at Symmetry Electronics and SemiconductorStore.com, we have partnered with Silvertel to help with your PoE needs. Silvertel manufactures a wide range of PoE modules at wattages suitable for a multitude of designs. Below is a chart of some of the PoE wattages offered by Silvertel and examples of some of the products you can power with them.
