Reason 1: MediaTek’s most efficient AI processor ever

The growth of AI-enabled activities within smartphones continues in breadth and ambition, so the requirement of high performance edge-AI hardware also grows as well. MediaTek has improved the APU (AI processing unit) within the Helio P70, upgrading the multi-core engine with an intelligent multi-threading scheduler that delivers up to 30% more AI processing efficiency than the previous P60. This means that even within the same performance scope the P70 can support even more complicated AI applications such as human pose detection.

This improvement is built on top of the MediaTek NeuroPilot foundation laid this year that provides brands/device makers and app developers with a powerful ecosystem to create innovative new stuff like faster RAW HDR footage processing; real-time beautification, image overlays, object and scene identification, and AR/MR acceleration.

Common frameworks such as TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe and Caffe2 or other 3rd party frameworks can be used, as well as Google Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI) and MediaTek NeuroPilot SDK. The NeuroPilot SDK extends the Android NNAPI allowing developers and device makers to bring their code closer-to-metal for better performance and power-efficiency.

Reason 2: Great for gaming

MediaTek Helo P70 is designed with mobile gaming in mind. In addition to its faster clocked CPU and GPU over the P60 (now 2.1GHz and 900MHz respectively), the P70 includes unique optimizations to enhance software multi-threading, reduce frame-rate jitter, and provide latency improvements in critical user areas such as touch controls, display visuals and networking, delivering a highly responsive and fluid gaming experience. In popular games that frequently generate a heavy load across the SoC it provides 7% better DOU performance while also saving up to 35% on power versus competitor solutions.

Reason 3: Big cameras without the big power drain

The P70 supports dual cameras up to 24MP + 16MP, or alternatively a single, super-sized 32MP option that can capture pics at 30FPS with zero shutter delay (ZSD). At 16MP it can capture video at 90fps for ultra-fast recording. This not only means super-sized selfies or beautiful portrait pics but also fun slow-mos that let you pick the perfect moment.

Its three ISPs are tuned to provide significant power-savings of up to 500mW. Working together they save up to 18% power over previous generation dual-camera setups, allowing you to shoot as long as you want without concern for battery-life.

Reason 4: Great for HDR pictures

With HDR-capable displays and photography a new trend for the latest smartphones, The MediaTek Helio P70 is unique among peers in its focus on real-time HDR capture and its hardware-driven ability to process RAW HDR images. Other HDR-centric enhancements include RAW-domain multi-frame HDR capture and Zig-Zag HDR.

Reason 5: Full to the brim with real (hardware, not software) camera accelerators

Inside the P70 a high-resolution depth engine gives a 3X boost in depth-mapping performance that enables real-time (24fps) previews of depth of field (bokeh) effect photos for a smooth user experience. It’s not only better quality, this hardware-engine saves 43mA per second versus competitor alternatives.

There's faster shot-to-JPEG processing - as MFNR (MFLL) performance has been improved by 20% - so you’ll never experience a stutter as you capture a burst of photos.

Further hardware enhancements include a hardware warping engine used for electronic image stabilization (EIS), saving 23mA per second vs GPU; an anti-blooming engine that prevents white-out; and accurate AI facial detection with intelligent scene detection that generates better 3A (AE, AF and AWB).

Reason 6: MediaTek AI-based Video Encoding Solution

MediaTek’s new AI-based video encoding solution selectively enhances video call quality in focal areas such as faces, people or moving objects, bettering the user experience even when connection bandwidth is limited. This clever encoding solution uses the combined power of P70’s hardware video encoder, its powerful AI processing capacity and MediaTek NeuroPilot enhancements to actively assess and optimize the focal regions, while also providing the best power efficiency and call quality, even on low bit-rate video streams.

This AI-based video encoding solution can be applied to video call and conferencing scenarios; and pending application support can potentially be applied to enhance Skype calls or other messaging service video calls, YouTube, Twitch or other gamer reaction video streams.

Reason 7: CorePilot 4

Power management and design optimizations in the P70 allow it to reach up to 35% lower power in gaming scenarios. This equates into longer sustainable peak performance use, longer battery life and lower operating temperatures of up to 4.5ºC, greatly improving the user experience.

MediaTek exclusive CorePilot 4 technology manages how tasks are assigned between processing resources, with a focus on maintaining a sustainable user experience.

  • Thermal Management: Utilizing a sophisticated thermal management system it ensures that the SoC is always operating within optimal temperature ranges – prolonging battery life and ensuring peak performance.
  • UX Monitoring: CorePilot 4 continually monitors the user experience, including frames per second data and activity information, so it can optimize the task management based upon a given standard of performance.
  • Energy Aware Scheduler (EAS+):  Based upon input from the Thermal Management system and the UX Monitoring, the EAS+ chooses the right cluster(s), at a select frequency that yields an optimal voltage for the current load. This provides a consistent and sustained user experience while also maximizing battery life.

Reason 8: Dual 4G VoLTE (Dual SIM)

Dual 4G SIM is available with the P70 enabling it to use VoLTE and ViLTE services on either SIM. Compared to traditional calls, VoLTE/ViLTE provides the best possible call and live video experience, with faster call setup time and noticeably better sound quality. With 4G LTE benefits, the second SIM also has faster connectivity, more reliable coverage and lower power consumption than previous generation products. The P70 also meets the needs of 4G-only operators and is future proof as older 2G/3G networks are progressively retired.

Reason 9: The latest cellular technologies

MediaTek is one of the world’s largest producers of cellular modems. We focus on learning your needs: how you want to share, connect, and consume, both at work and at play. Then we closely match those needs with speed, agility, and power efficiency to optimize your mobile experience.

MediaTek’s latest generation 4G LTE WorldMode modem merges the power and performance you need with the latest cellular features and standards, such as awesome voice and video capabilities like IMS (VoLTE\ViLTE\VoWi-Fi)—now supported by over 100 cellular operators worldwide; and LTE broadcast with global eMBMS; breakthrough High-Performance User Equipment (HPUE); and 600MHz (Band 71) frequency support in North America. All these improve the user experience, with greater connection reliability no matter where you travel, and power-efficiency for better battery life.

Reason 10: Smart Antenna technology (TAS 2.0)

MediaTek's second-generation smart antenna technology (TAS 2.0) automatically detects and chooses the ideal best antenna to use, no matter how or where you hold it or which direction you face. TAS 2.0 optimizes the signal for quality and connection reliability. With less signal boosting required, it reduces power usage, conserving power and bettering battery life.

Reason 11: Tiny 12nm fabrication

Just for fun, imagine how tiny 12 nm is—compare it to the thickness of a human hair, which is a whopping 7,000nm! The new Helio P70 is the result of the innovative 12nm FinFET manufacturing process that delivers up to 15 percent below equivalent 14 nm products.
