Tech Fact or Fiction. In this series Symmetry Electronics Appilcation Engineers delve into the common myths and misconceptions which frequently come up and put them to rest, using their expert knowledge and experience.

Fact or Fiction?

Fiction!

                                                                                                                        Tyler:
This is a great common myth and there is a lot of confusion regarding the topic. The hidden costs of using an SoC almost always outweigh the savings from using an SoC over a module unless your production quantity is very large. This is also a good resource:

Nimit:
Comparing Soc and Modules is like comparing apples to oranges. Soc and modules can only be compared in the right context such as overall cost of product, design effort involved, time to market, technical expertise available with customer etc.

Anuja:
Although the price of SoCs are less than modules there are a lot of considerations which are involved in making a choice apart from pricing. SoCs do not have any approvals. Getting this approval adds great deal of time delay and monetary costs. Apart from this developing SoCs requires more engineering resources too. There is no correct answer for this. Depending on the use case Symmetry can help you make the right choice!
