A connector is an electromechanical device used to create connections between the parts of a circuit or between different electrical circuits, joining them into a larger circuit. Most connections have a gender–either a plug or a socket. As passive components, connectors do not impact the function of a circuit. However, flawed mounting of connectors can increase the risk of failure, especially in the event of vibration or shock.
Connectors play an important part in routing signals and power between electronic systems in nearly all electronics applications, including:
- Consumer and commercial goods
- Computer hardware
- Power supplies
- Telecommunication and networking systems
- Medical equipment
- Robotics
- Industrial automation
- Automotive
